  • OCI application: Lost Naturalization Certificate

I have lost my USA Naturalization Certificate.

I would prefer not to apply to U.S. immigration for a duplicate Certificate as there is a $300+ fee...

    1. Is there any other alternative to satisfy the OCI requirement for copy of Naturalization Certificate?
    Perhaps submitting old American Passport?

    2. According to the checklist below, If applying for OCI while in India, there is no requirement to produce the copy of Naturalization Certificate.

Is that information still accurate? Or has the requirements changed?

How to apply for OCI Card in India. Documents required with OCI application. Procedure to get OCI card in India . . .

    Documents required checklist

The documents required for OCI are required by FRRO in three sets. Make copies before going to FRRO.

    3. Copy of Registration Permit, if applicant arrived in India prior 90 days at the time of OCI application
    4. Applicants or applicant’s parents or applicants grandparent’s previous or current Indian passport (if previously holding Indian passport then current passport also)
    5. Applicant’s birth certificate, if applied on the basis of parents. (if applied on the basis of grand parents then parents birth certificate as well present passport showing proper linkage.)
    6. Applicants Marriage certificate if applied on the basis of Indian passport on maiden name.
    7. Three photographs of 35 mm x 35 mm size without border on light color background, with ears clearly visible, no spectacles and caps. (Not on white or off-white background)
    8. If difference in name or alphabet on the Indian passport Gazette copy for change of name or Petition for name change or Deed Poll for name change. 9. You dont have a scanned copy of it anywhere? One of the first things I did when I got mine was to scan it in color so that I had a digital copy. But I dont have an answer on how to proceed without a copy of it.

I received the Naturalization Certificate over 25 years ago...

And I seem to recall that it actually forbade any photocopying. Should have kept it safe, but I guess I thought I would never have need for it since I had a USA passport...

Don't know why a Naturalization Certificate is required for OCI application as my USA passport should be proof of citizenship. Makes no sense.

I agree. If you have passport you don't need to show Nat. Certificate.

I think your checklist is good and I don't think you need Nat. Certificate if you are applying from India for OCI.

Agree with your comments. I *think* what they are verifying is the prior nationality before becoming a US citizen since its listed on the Naturalization Certificate. Am sure there are other ways to prove that or come to that determination.

Also there seem to be some folks that had applied at FRRO, India. So you may want to ping them. Check http://www.immihelp.com/tracker/oci-tracker

They might be able to tell what was needed during application. Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses. I will check out the links...

According to the link I posted, it seems that Naturalization Certificate is not required if applying for OCI within India, but it is required if applying from USA.

Somewhat confusing because I thought all OCI applications are sent to India for processing, so I would expect the requirements to be the same...

I think if you apply in India, you are subject to police verification(as you reside in India at that time). Please search for experiences post by others in this forum or Google them.
