No surname in Indian Passport - How to fix?

I am still a student in India. I am 20 years old. I recently renewed my old passport which was made when I was a minor. This one had no surname in it. The lady at the passport office told me that because of that my new passport would also not have the surname mentioned. The new passport has just arrived without the surname.
However now I have learned about the problems in the US for studies and immigration.
I want to get this fixed.
What should I do?
