Should I update my surname while applying for my passport renewal

My Indian passport expires on 15th June 2015.

As per my current passport my name is as follows:
Surname: BLANK
Given Name: Ajay Unnikrishnan

It actually needs to be:
Surname: Unnikrishnan
Given Name: Ajay

While filling the Online Application for Passport renewal, can I write the correct Surname and Given name within the respective text boxes and expect it to be updated within the new passport that would be issued to me or should I continue with Given Name: Ajay Unnikrishnan and Surname: BLANK for passport renewal and track the name change separately post receiving my renewed passport?

This would be considered as name change and Consulate would suggest you to follow name change procedure (i.e advertise in India newspaper, US news paper etc and submit paperwork). Can you check with consulate directly to see if they can make the change without following this process?
