Applying for Student Visa, Confused about expiration date

Hi,

I have applied to US/CANADA for graduate studies, I require a 2 year study permit. I plan to leave in July 2016. However, my passport is set to expire on July 2017. Since, I cannot renew the passport before less than 1 year is left for it's expiration i.e. July 2016. What should I do? Should I apply for the visa and renew the passport once I am there or what needs to be done?

Any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks.
