  • Renunciation: Time Taken at SFO center

My renunciation application at the SFO embassy has been showing as "Application is 'AT EMBASSY'. Application is 'Under Process' at Consulate for decision making." since 01/25/2016. That makes it nearly 20 working days since it has been there. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Can you share the timelines it took or any other manner you were able to speed it up?

I applied for Visa and renunciation together last year sometime around may-june. I got my passport and renunciation certificate in less than 2 weeks. Did they ask for anything extra in your case or was it a normal case?

In my case, I need the renunciation for my OCI. I am just surprised it takes this long to process the renunciation in isolation. On the consulate website, it says that "General processing time period - for US passport holders - 3 to 5 working days (from the day the application is received in the Consulate). " In my case, it has been 20 working days with no report from their end. They have a form for sending inquiry, but no response has been forthcoming. Does anyone know any good way to get through this?

it's normal if it had only taking 20 working days. normally the Renunciation is going to take 1month or more. it is a huge mistake if you planed to apply OCI you should apply Renunciation with OCI instead of stand alone or with VISA. now nothing to do just wait for granted renunciation

Yup, I realize that now, but that ship has sailed. Have you had any experience directly contacting the embassy to speed this up? CKGS essentially does not do anything more than relay the status which I can see online as well.

Why would the renunciation take a month unless something has been flagged? I applied in NYC last Monday via mail and I got the certificate and the passports back this Monday!

What is frustrating is that there seems to be no transparency around this. No way to know how much time this is going to take. I figured I'll at least check with others who might have applied recently to get a sense of their timings, but unfortunately, haven't heard from anyone who has done that at SFO. Clearly, NY center is operating at much better efficiency

Its possible the consulate returned them and they are sitting with CKGS. I got my OCI back first. Had to bug the hell out of CKGS for getting my renunciation certificate + passport back. Funny thing is after I got my docs in Fedex (which I paid for at the time of application), they sent me an email saying that my documents are ready for "pickup" and I should either make a payment for courier or stop by in the next 48 hours. I replied asking "what documents" to which there is no reply.

Wow. In your case, was the status still showing as being 'under process' by the embassy while CKGS had them in their possession? That would be outright ridiculous but given the fact that this has taken over a month, now I am beginning to suspect this might be a possibility. Just another small question: which center was this at?

Will absolutely do. I called them up today once more. Their answer, "We (call center based in Bombay) have raised an ask to the CKGS office (based in San Francisco) who in turn have raised a request with the embassy. The embassy does not share any details of what the progress of the application is and hence we have no way of telling you how long it will take. In fact, we don't have any way of telling you how long it will take before the embassy writes back to us. When they do, we'll send you an e-mail. Until then, wait indefinitely"

Today marks exactly one month since the embassy started "processing" my renunciation. Short of calling CKGS each day and pestering them to ensure that this three way channel (CKGS Bombay - CKGS SF - Indian Consulate SF) is actually being excercised and the application is actually being processed (assuming that they are stating the truth unlike what happened with 'aristotle' below), I don't see what else to do other than suck it up and be patient and persistent

UPDATE: the application has been approved and has been sent to CKGS. Took from Jan 25th to Feb 25th for that to happen. No way for me to know if it was because I explicitly asked CKGS to raise an escalation, but I am glad this is through (I am hoping it lands in my hands early next week). Thanks all for following along.

The SF consulate site says 3-5 business days to process it. I think I have every right to complain
