New OCI procedure

Hi,

I am applying for OCI application for my daughter born in US. The procedure is recently changed and it seems you can not apply in person. And the CKGC website mention that you need to send both applicant original passport and parents original passport along with the application by post. I wanted to know if some body recently applied for OCI and this information is correct. Is it fine to send both applicant and parents original passport in the beginning itself. And how much time it takes to receive the passport and OCI when applying from New York Mission. Any additional information will be helpful.

Hi,

Yes, they do require you to send in the passports during the time of application. So, you will need to submit these with the the application.

I had applied and did not send these in to begin with. These were sent to the NY office. On receiving the application my status showed "we are missing documents and application is on hold". I had to then send the original passports in separately. The original passports were then returned within 4 days after verification. Although, the message is again very confusing as it says your original passport has been withdrawn. I had to call 3 times and email them as well before I was convinced this is their way of saying that the originals have been verified and are being returned. Strange use of words 'withdrawn' means something else, but it seems its normal part of process.

I do think this is a very inefficient process and a wast of resources. This does cause a lot of anxiety and has the possibility of misplacement of docs - but who am I ? Indian govt. will do what they want to do without thinking about the common man.

what is your Jurisdiction? if submit to San Francisco, do not send any original documents specially current passport or pio card. sfo dosen't need any original documents verifications

I sent the application to SFO office on 1st Feb 2016 for OCI in Lieu of PIO (minor). Sent original passport of the applicant only. Passport returned back in a weeks time. I am awaiting for OCI to return from Delhi.

OCI Original Documets

Since they changed OCI procedure it is requiring people to send original documents such as passports and OCI books (except SFO). My advice to everyone is to write name, address and WeB reference ID on a piece of paper and tape it to the back of each document. This way even if the documents are somehow separated from the file, the information will be there with the documents itself and they should be able to trace who to send them back to.

I was sweating over having to send these and the possibility of them being misplaced. Then I got the idea of taping return address on the back of all original documents.I felt much better that way. I did receive them back as well, and having the details on the documents made me feel much better. Just wanted to pass along this tip to all those who are worried about the documents being misplaced.

In theory you don't need to submit original documents to San Francisco, but we live in the San Francisco bay area and I wasted most of this week trying to get them to accept my child's reissue of oci (new passport) application without
sending in original oci card and expired passport with u visa before giving up and mailing them. Here is my tale of woe.
I received an email stating that the following were missing:

"PHYSICAL EXPIRED USA PASSPORT WITH 'U' VISA,
PHYSICAL OCI CARD OF APPLICANT.
PLEASE PRINT/COPY THE FIRIST PAGE OF OCI REGESTRAION FORM USING SAME WEBFILE ID AND REPLACE THE UPLOADED DIGITAL SIGNATURE/THUMB PRINT WITH A CLEAR AND CLEAN SIGNATURE/THUMB PRINT IN THE BOX UNDER THE PHOTO."

I spoke to Cox and Kings on the phone three times this week and each time the first thing they tell me is that I need to send in physical documents. I then tell them checklist items 9 and 10 on their website in regards to passport with u visa and oci card say don't send them for San Francisco. Each time, they put me on hold for 10-15 minutes. Then finally they admit you don't
need to send original documents. I am told I can email first page of oci registration with new signature (I don't know why they didn't like the uploaded signature of my five year old child). I send an email to the address provided with new signature page and
state that I spoke to Cox and Kings on this date and time and they said I don't need to send physical documents for oci and passport with u visa and also state checklist items 9 and 10 say don't. I also enclose the checklist with my email. I don't hear back from them, so I resend document via email. Finally after my third phone call with Cox and Kings they say they will have a manager in SF look into it
and I will will receive an update. The result is I receive an email that states the oci application is on
hold with the following missing:

"Still missing physical expired USA passport with U visa sticker and Physical OCI card for the applicant"

Maybe I can waste more time trying to convince Cox and Kings to process the application without oci card and
expired passport with u visa or give up and spend 5 minutes to mail documents to Cox and Kings. I gave up. I just hope they
don't lose my physical documents like they did for that person in NY.
