I am applying for renewal of my Indian passport at the NY Consulate through CKGS. When I select my marital status as married, it becomes mandatory to submit my marriage certificate for endorsing spouse name on the passport. Now, ours was a traditional marriage with a priest issued marriage certificate and we do not have a court registrar issued marriage certificate. Unfortunately, I just found that the marriage certificate has to be a court issued certificate to be accepted. I though I was in a jam but after much back and forth the CKGS reps suggested that if I can get a US court magistrate to notarize an affidavit based on our priest-issued marriage certificate then I can submit it and that may work. Now my question is, has anyone faced this problem or done this before? I have been calling the courts and talking to various departments but none of them seem to understand why I need what I need and keep telling me they don't provide the service. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am located in central NJ, Middlesex county.

I faced a similar problem in order to get medical insurance for my wife through my job. I actually considered going though another wedding ceremony officiated by a justice of the peace. In the end, I didn't have to go through this -- they accepted our tax returns.
I am wondering whether you could use this option.
Good luck.Last edited by sojourner; 08-23-2016, 09:11 AM.

Why can't you get a marriage certificate from India. It might not be too late to register the marriage based on the priest certificate and get a certificate from there. I am not sure if endorsing spouse name is compulsory in the passport. You might be able to do it in next renewal after getting marriage certificate from India.
