Does spouse name addition change the Surname in Indian passport

Hi

I applied for a re-issue of passport for my Wife with Changes in Address and to include my name as spouse. When we received the passport, my wife's surname is changed(father name to My first name). There is no separate field as Spouse which has my name. This certainly looks to me like a name change. All other documents(Bank stmt, Edu certificates) of my Wife has her father name as Surname.

Is this fine and expected? or should the passport carry a new field for spouse name? I am confused and need clarification.
