Traveling to india on Non-Machine Readable Passport

Hi All,
I need to travel to India and have non-MR passport issues in Chicago. I have seen some posts where going to india is not issue But while returning indian immigration people are giving stricket warning to get MR passport. My question have anyone recently returned to USA on non-MR. Please share your experience.

It seems in USA they only checking visa or GC not not concerned about MR passport.

It is International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) that has set a deadline of the 24th November 2015 to stop accepting non MR passports. Even airlines may not agree to board you with non MR passport. Check with airlines and immigration authorities prior to travel. It would be better to get it replaced with MR passport to avoid any inconvenience at the airport or immigration counter.
