  • OCI application - a few questions - how to affix photos; original passport required?

Just wrapping up an OCI application and CKGS is closed today, so I thought I'd check here on a few questions.

    1. Affidavit in Lieu of Originals - how should the self attested / notarized column be completed? Obviously the document needs to be notarized, but I'm wondering about this particular empty column. Can it be signed by the applicant for each row representing a document for which a copy is included in the application?

    2. How should the passport photos be included? Should a photo be glued or taped to the upper right corner of page one of the OCI registration form? How should the second photo be included? Paper clipped to the OCI registration form?

    3. The document checklist calls for the original passport, but is this correct? Do they really expect us to go without passport for as long as the entire application takes to process?

    4. I noticed that the Renunciation application document checklist calls for the CKGS payment receipt, but the OCI application document checklist does not. Is this correct?

    Thanks for any help!

Some searches show that applicant should glue one photo to the OCI registration form. Then paper clip second photo to the same form.

Looks like the original of the current passport must be submitted with the application. This seems to be the new process as there is no later 'match up' as there was under the old process. But it seems CKGS will ship the passport back to you before the OCI application is fully processed and OCI card issued.

      Below is what we did
      1) We just listed the documents under a), b)... and notary filed in the last section and stamped his seal at the bottom along with his signature. Also, we made our kid to sign the Affidavit in Lieu of Originals in-front of notary. If kid is below 5 yrs then one of the parents can sign in the Signature field
      2) Affix one passport photo using glue. Second photo just clip to OCI application form.
      3) Yes, please send original passport along with documents.
      4) We did send the CKGS online payment receipt along with documets

        Thanks.

        What I did:
        1. signed next to each document in Affidavit in Lieu of Originals. Then signed in box below that and had notarized.
        2. Same as you - glue one photo, paperclip one photo.
        3. Yes, I sent passport.
        4. I did not include the CKGS payment receipt with the OCI application since it was not listed in the checklist. I did include it with the Renunciation application.

The San Francisco CKGS told me that original passport is never required to be submitted for OCI which is good for those that need to travel while OCI is processing.

Of course, it is confusing if NY processing center has different requirements than SF. Hopefully everything is standardized now.

I think that may have been the old process. I believe current process requires the passport. When you pay for shipping with CKGS, one of the envelopes is for them to ship the passport back to you, so they don't hold the passport for the entire duration the OCI application is processed. Also, the CKGS document checklist specifically requests the original passport.

Anyway, I'll find out soon enough, but I'm expecting to get the passport back in a couple of weeks, and I'll update this thread.

"Affidavit in Lieu of originals" glitch on CGKS website "My Account"

                For your question # 1

"Affidavit in Lieu of originals" can be downloaded and printed from "My Account" section anytime. What I did notice is that when you download it right after you complete your application, you get a column that says "Self Attested/Notarized" which is blank for all the documents (this confuses people as we don't know if we are suppose to sign against all the document listed) but if you go to "My Account" after say a couple of days, the same column changes to "No of copies" with "01" listed against all the document rows. Not sure if it was just with my account or others have noticed the same but just to keep in mind.

                    Hello all:

I am applying for OCI Re-issue, new passport, and have a question about affixing photo to the OCI Miscellaneous services application form. When I uploaded the photo to the OCI web site it already added the photo to the application form along with the digital signature I had uploaded. Should we still affix the photo to the physical application form? I ask this because in the application form there is no blank box where we could affix the photo, the box already has the digital photo I had uploaded in the OCI web site. Thanks

rujoodha Well, if you can prove Indian roots with proper documentation you should be fine. For your case, it would be better if you go apply in person (Whenever that opens once the Covid situation is over) rathen than by courier. This way, you can always ask questions to them in-person directly.
