  • Lost Passport

    Hi Guys,

    Following is my case:
    I had two passports.(new + old).

There was some data error on the the old passport, so they cancelled my old passport & issued a new one in 1996 in Visakhapatnam, india. They deliberately mentioned in one of the pages in the new passport that they "returned the old passport". As far as I recollect I did not do any activity with my old passport & looks like I have misplaced it somewhere ( I havent seen that passport for a while).
All my visa stamp & other activities are all recorded in my new passport.

I am in this country since 6+ years..
Just last weekend, I had been to the Indian Consulate office in NYC to renew my passport (Due for October 2006) & they asked me to bring in my old passport & I explained them my situation with the old passport. So they asked me to lodge a complaint with the Police department & then obtain a Report that needs to be submitted to the consulate guys to renew my current passport.

    Questions:

1.Where do I lodge the complaint in India or here with my local county police
2.Once I lodge the complaint, is it OK if I just have report number to renew my current passport( I mean if I provide the report number to the consulate is it enough ?) or do I have to produce the report itself ?
3.What kind of questions do I expect from the local police if I were to lodge a complaint with them ?
4.Will there be any implications if I lodge a complaint with the local police that I should be aware of ?

Would highly appreciate if someone can answer my questions.

    Thanks,

I lost my passport as well...whatever town you live in (USA), basically your local police station and tell them you lost your passport and you want to file a police report. the officer will ask you when did you notice it was lost and where..they are very nice. no need to be worried. they will probably tell you to come in like 2 days, or if you get lucky they might give it to you then n there. i have actually lost my police report twice in a year, i went back and they simply printed it out for me. very nice people.
