What is the process at the consulate for Indian passport renewal?

Hi,

My passport is about to expire so I sent in my application to CKGS in New York. The online status says that the application is now "in transit" to the consulate.

I would like to know what is the expected process that happens at the consulate? Is there any police verification that needs to be done? If so, I need to inform my family back home that they should expect such a verification.

I would appreciate any help.
