  • PIO Card Validity After Sep 30, 2018

    Hello,

New in the forum... After getting some ambiguous responses from CKGS I registered here in this forum for help.
Hope you don't mind answering a question.

Here is the GOI bulletin I have a question about:

    "OCI in Lieu of PIO
All PIO cards are valid until September 30, 2018. AFTER September 30, 2018, PIO card will be considered as an invalid travel document. Therefore, all applicants, who have not yet converted their PIO cards to OCI card, are requested to apply for OCI in lieu of PIO before September 30, 2018. Foreign nationals can travel with valid travel document i.e. Passport and PIO Card if the date of their journey commenced ON or BEFORE September 30, 2018."

My PIO to OCI is initiated, but it looks like it will take some time before I have the OCI in hand. I am planning on a trip to India, leaving US around Sep 27, 2018 and returning around Oct 22, 2018.

I currently have a valid PIO card which will expire in 2020. I understand that the PIO is not valid after Sep 30, 2018. I am pretty sure I can enter on or before Sep 30, 2018 but since at the time of leaving India as my PIO will not be valid, will I face any problems?

Again I still have my PIO card. If I can still travel without any issues, I can send my PIO for match up after I return in October.

    Just go

IMO, you need PIO valid only to enter India. So, you are ok to go to India.

On return, you will be scrutinized by the airline and connecting airport for the destination papers (aka passport). You have that! The only place you might have trouble is emigration counter in India. You can still show your just became non-valid PIO and printed proof of pending OCI application.

    Does this make sense?

      Yes Sir.
It makes all the sense. This is the way it is supposed to work.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate it.
