  • Documents for Renunciation and OCI card (New York)?

Please could someone briefly list the documents needed for applying for Renunciation and OCI card? I went through the CKGS website to get info on how to apply, but found the website super-confusing and counterintuitive. All I understood was that if I were to apply under the New York jurisdiction, then I have to apply for the Renunciation first and then the OCI.

Also, has anyone applied for an Indian e-visa? Is the process simpler than applying for an OCI card?

    Thanks!

Just start the process with a dummy name and email and go to step 2, you will find the check list of required documents there.

Here is my required document list for Renunciation at Chicago
    - Renunciation Certificate Form (Two Originals)
    - Document Checklist
    - Additional Particulars Form
    - Copy of Naturalization Certificate
    - Most Recent Indian Passport (Original & copy of first three pages of the passport and last two pages of the passport)
    - Copy of the information page and the last two amendment pages of the US Passport
    - Proof of Address
    - Copy of Online Payment Receipt

Here is my required document list for OCI at Chicago
    - Document Checklist
    - Affidavit in Lieu of Originals (Notarized)
    - OCI Application Form (from Govt Website)
    - Photographs (Two)
    - Additional Particulars Form
    - Current US Passport (Original with one copy of the Photo page and Endorsement pages)
    - Proof of Marital Status (As Applicable) (For ex: Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree etc)
    - Proof of Indian Origin of Applicant (Copy of first three and last two pages of the last Indian Passport held.)
    - Copy of Naturalization Certificate (if Naturalized)
    - Proof of Renunciation of Indian Citizenship (Renunciation Certificate)
    - Proof of Address
    - Copy of Online Payment Receipt

The e-Visa process is probably simpler. But note that the e-Visa is only double entry, valid for only 120-days from date of issue and costs $102.50.
OCI is life-long and comes with a host of other citizenship benefits that are not allowed for Visa holders.

1st - if your time is close to travel, you should wait for applying OCI and just get e-Visa. as stated e-VISA allows you to stay in india for a limited time.
2nd- if you do have time before you travel, and you know that you will travel to india in future as well, then you might as well get OCI (if you qualify for it)

I have applied for OCI multiple times for my family and my self. Even my 2 year old has and OCI. it it peace of mind.
The documents are generally straight forward and listed in the check-list when you apply.

for OCI- you do need to scan your passport, passport size photo, and signiture and upload it to indian government website.

      - here is a list of documents i just sent to Houston last week

      for OCI
      1) original check list
      2) Affidavit in Lieu of Originals
      3) OCI application

      Indian Passport held.)
      9)Copy of Naturalization Certificate
      10) Proof of Address (Copy of ID/DL)
      11) Landing paper (Only for CANADIAN citizen) (i did not need this)

        Timeline for renunciation and OCI?

Thanks a lot, arkaa and pateldip84. I'm unclear about the affidavit in lieu of part..what's that about?

Also, I'm planning a trip to India in July and anticipate traveling fairly frequently in the future. I guess an OCI makes more sense.

Arkaa: what was the timeline for receiving ur renunciation and oci card (you applied separately, right?)?
