  • help with PIO card app.

    Hello,

I'm hoping someone here can clarify something for me. I'm applying for a PIO card (my husband is Indian, I'm American), but I don't want to send my passport and 300 dollars to the embassy before I'm sure I understand the directions on the application. There is one item that says that if the applicant has never held Indian nationality, that the applicant should include photocopies of his or her parents' passports. Does that apply to me, since I'm American and have never held Indian nationality? I would assume it actually applies to kids born in the US to Indian parents. I don't think my parents have passports at this point--they haven't done any traveling for years.

I wanted to ask the Indian embassy directly, but no one ever answers the phone or replies to email. Very frustrating!

    D. Jain

    Thanks for your help.

: He / She should submit the following documents:
    (a) Application form duly filled in (in duplicate) with four passport size photographs.
    (b) A notarised copy each of his/her birth certificate , his/her parent's latest Indian passports (either expired or not yet expired ) and his/her current US/Foreign passport.
    (c) The prescribed fee by cashiers check/money order drawn in favour of Consulate General of India, Houston.
    (d) Return mailing charges of $ 15/-, if applying by mail.
Note : Please also mention your telephone number in the application form

they want copies of parents indian passport expired or current. So if the old passports are still there then fine. But since you are applying on the basis of ur husband then his passport's copy should be included.

So, since my parents are not Indian and I am not applying on the basis of their nationality, I do not need copies of their (nonexistent) passports, correct? Thanks.

Yes you do not have to send your parents' passports. It is applicable only for childrend born here getting PIO on the basis of indian parents/grand parents.

Which consulate jurisdiction do you live in?

Thanks. I *finally* got someone on the phone (by calling the NY consulate) and she told me the same thing. I'm in Virginia, so I'll be using the Washington DC consular wing of the embassy there. What a relief--I really wanted to apply for this before our next trip to India in December.

I guess it was kind of a dumb question, but the instructions were not very clear and I didn't want to send them my passport/money and then find out I was missing documents.

Usually if there is a missing document they send you a letter asking for it.

Yes, I figured as much but didn't want to end up cutting it too close to when we leave for India.
