urgent help needed: I have GC but expired indianpassport

Hi,
I really need urgent help. I have US green card which i got after filing asylum. Now my indian passport has expired. I want to go India for marriage. I have heard that if i apply for new passport and go to india with new passport, Indian Govt. can stop me because I have filed asylum in US. Please suggest me if this is possibly true. and also suggest me some solution to face this situation. I am really thankful for any suggestion.

If you are originally from India and have filed for asylum with United States, then obviously you cannot go back to India. By requesting asylum you informed the United States government that you will be unfairly prosecuted by the Indian government and hence cannot go back to that country.

Based on that information United States granted you permanent residency in the country.

yes, you are right. But when we filed asylum, situations were different in India and thats why US was giving GC based on asylum but now US Govt. also knows that there are no problmes in india and thats why they don't grant GC based on asylum anymore. But there should be some way to visit your country (india) to see your relatives??

Yes, ethically you're absolutely correct. Trying to explain that to Indian government would be another issue.

You can take the risk of travelling to India and back and expect little or no hurdles.

Else, you can consult a good attorney to make sure you're properly covered and retain him/her so in case you're stuck anywhere, you don't have to go running to find one at the last moment.

I agree with you that you should be allowed to go to your home country now, since the situation may have changed.

It will not hurt you to be prepared fully before you embark on the journey, that will also give you peace of mind for your vacation.
