  • Regarding education in India of a minor US-citizen having OCI-status

    Dear friends,

I work in the U.S., and shall soon be eligible to receive the U.S. Citizenship. My son is twelve years old and is currently studying in India. After receiving my Naturalization Certificate, and I shall apply for the U.S. citizenship for my son. After receiving the U.S. citizenship for my son, I am planning to apply for the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) for both of us, and then to return to India. My son has all along been studying in India and I would like him to continue his studies in India until he completes a bachelor's degree. I would like to know as to whether:

    1. My son can continue to study in India as a U.S. Citizen with OCI-status.

    2. My son would be eligible to apply for universities in India as a native Indian student as a U.S. citizen with OCI-status.

Please give your suggestions and advises as to whether he could apply for admission to Indian Universities as a U.S. citizen with OCI-status.

    Thanking you for your help,

    Regards,
    Gopalan

      As far as I understand:

      1. Yes.

      2. He can apply for universities in India under the general quota or the NRI quota. He will be charged non-resident tuition fees which can be higher than the fees for native Indian students.
