  • Indian Passport Validity Question

Guys, I have a quick question regarding passport.
My passport was issued back in 1997 and it is valid for 20 years, meaning it will expire in 2017. This being the case,Do I need to apply for a new passport now, since it has more than 10 years validity ? I heared that passports issued with more than 10 years validity, need to be applied/renewed after 10 years even if it is still valid and not expired. Thanks in advance for your reply. Awaiting for your reply.

    Thanks,
    jero

Indian consulate would issue a new 10 year passport for free in lieu of the 20 yr passport as people travelling on 20 year passports have been subject to problems at POE.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.

        Not aware of ...

... the problems if the passport is more than 10 years old.

The passport is issued on the name of the President of the country and is honored as described in the document.

If the passport is valid on the date of use and for some time as required by the travelled country, it should be good.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, there is no legal mandate on having to renew or re-apply for a new passport if your current passport is valid.

Also, do note that you need a passport as a document only if you wish to use it for such purposes as travel internationally or as a picture ID.

You are not obliged to have a passport or show one if you live in your own home country and do not wish to use the document.

        Good luck.

          thanks!!

Thanks Knowledgeable for yr response. Ofcourse,I'm planning to visit India this winter and so I thought of double checking the fact. I undertsand yr point that the doc is valid till it was issued, but the issue gets little tricky due to a memo/instruction sometime back asking everyone to get a new passport if it is more than 10 yrs old. Recently I saw somewhere that it is ok to have 20 yrs passport and it will be acknowledged. The confusion here is: "Will there be any problems/harassment beacuse of this at the POE ?

Guys throw some light. Any personal experiences on this issue or any link/quote from a reliable source is greatly appreciated.

          Thanks,
          Jero
