  • Passport renewal in US

    Hi,

I've H1B visa and I'm currently in India. Planning to be in US next month. My passport will expire on Jan 2009. Would it better if I renew it in India and come to US or is it OK to come to US and then apply for renewal at Indian consulate/mission offices. What are the documents that I need to furnish (like address proofs, identity cards). Is there any specific duration (say 6 months or 1 year) that we need to reside in US to apply for NRI passport renewal.
I'm not finding any information regarging this on https://passport.gov.in/nri/

If I have to renew it in India it'll take another 2 months in normal procedure. I tried Tatkal but they are asking lot of docs which I do not have currently.

    So I've 2 options.

1.Renew it in India. In that case I'm thinking to be in US in Jan 2009. Currently US market is down, so I'm thinking about this option too.
2.TO be in US by Sep 1st week 2008 and try for passport renewal in US.In this case it looks like I get the I94 till Jan 2009 only (passport expiry time), though I've the H1B visa till Sep 30th 2009. Once I get the passport renewed, then I need to try for new I94 (do not know the exact procedure) till the visa expiry period (sep 30 2009)

Any ideas/inputs would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Srujana
