Tatkal application for Passport renewal

My passport going to be its 10 years expiry sometime in May next year and I'm planning to travel to India in 3rd or last week of Nov this year and I also need to do stamping this time. I heard that my passport should have atleast 6months of validity when I go for visa stamping.

I also heard from some of my friends who send their passport for renewal recently to Embassy in DC, it took almost a month to get back their new passports. I checked the embassy site it says I need to get an appointment before I go there and i got a date for 5 Nov that's the earliest one I could able get. I'm afraid I may not have that much time left to do that.

My question is: Can I apply passport renewal in tatkal. Is that I need to show any reason or proof for tatkal. Is that I need to get appointment and wait for that date to apply even for tatkal application.

This look like for someone who live in India want to apply for Passport Renewal in Passport office in India but my case is different. I'm currently live in US and I want to renew my passport here in Indian Embassy in Washington DC.

Here is my question

1. Is passport renewal through tatkal is only applicable for emergency cases only or anyone can apply through tatkal by paying additional fee at Indian Embassy at Washington DC
2. Do I need to take an appointment even if I apply through tatkal scheme.

Tatkal services are available with a higher fee paid. But the consular office will have to approve the application to be given in a rush. If its rush, you need not wait till your appointment date. But make sure you add a letter to the application stating your emergency and if possible any documentary evidance supporting the rush..
