Acquiring Indian Citizenship

Dear Sir/Madam,

My father inlaw wishes to apply for indian citizenship, he was born in india but then came into uk in his early twenties, and now holds a british passport. Since he travels to india regularly, he wishes to apply for indian citizenship. Please can you advise how we can proceed to make this application for him? if its possible or not...

What does he need Indian citizenship for? Please clarify.

Please note that if gets Indian citizenship, he will lose British citizenship.
