HELP with my visa!!!!

I have a tourist Indian visa that is going to expire on Feb 19 2009. My husband (Indian citizen) and I (Polish citizen) are planning to go visit our family in India in about a week. We are planning to stay for a month. I know my visa is close to expired but can I extend my stay while being in India (maybe apply there for visa or PIO card - we've been married for 15 months) or is it better to apply for visa before our journey.
I forgot to mention I have a tourist visa, should I apply for entry visa?

You should ideally apply for new visa before going to India.
