  • Baby born in India to Canadian/Indian couple - Canadian citizenship & OCI?

I am a Canadian citizen living in India married to an Indian citizen. I have my PIO card and we are planning on staying in India indefinitely. We are expecting, and want the child to be a Canadian citizen. However, I am confused as to the best option from the Indian side of things for our baby. I would like our child to obtain OCI status at the earliest possible opportunity, but some sources I have encountered say that the child of an Indian citizen born in India is not eligible for OCI, even if they obtain non-Indian citizenship. Is this correct? Are we limited to a PIO application if our child is born in India?

We would like to address this in India itself, and would prefer not having to go back to Canada to make these arrangements. Any advice or related experience would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

Are you a Canadian citizen of Indian origin? If so, your child can apply for OCI.

    Otherwise, no.

No, I am not of Indian origin. Does this mean our kids will never be eligible for OCI status?

Your child can get OCI if your spouse become Canadian citizen.

OK. So if my wife retains her Indian citizenship, then will our chldren be eligible only for PIO status?
