USA retaing Indian Passport at POE

Since my AP was expired while I reentered USA, they took sworn statements regarding my address, marital status, spousal info, legal status and have given a date for deferred inspection facility, after I provided a valid I-797 notice.
They also took my fingerprint, picture, copies of my documents and gave me a Parole for 20 days until I goto Deferred Inspection Facility. HAs anyone gone through this experience?
They have taken my passport, which is highly unusual and illegal. Any take on this...
