  • overstaying in india, Visa expired

I am an american citizen by way of Naturalization which i obtained in 2003, before that i had indian citizenship. I am married to an indian guy and staying in jaipur with my two kids who are also american citizens. I have been staying in jaipur continuously for last two years. Unfortunately I didnot notice that my visa expired in august 2008 and i have overstayed. To make matters worse i didnot register myself. Please help me what do i need to do. How can i extend my stay in India, where will i have to go to complete all the formalities. do i need to register my children aswell?

Go to the FRO ASAP and beg, grovel or whatever else is necessary. I'd suggest not even mentioning extending your stay right now, but rather addressing the overstay and non-registration.

As you know, this is a serious situation. Many countries, the US included, would likely deport you and not issue any further visas to you for overstaying. As you're originally Indian, they may give some leeway, but it's important that you recognize that you're in a difficult position here. I'm not trying to sound like Mr. Doom-and-Gloom or unnecessarily scare you, but the sooner you address this and get it resolved, the better.

And please post info on how it is resolved -- information or advice is very helpful for those in similar situations.
