  • Surrendering Indian Passport and getting US Passport in India

    Hello,
I guess there are many in this group who has taken Indian Passport for US born kid while returning back to India. As per my understanding if such a kid ever return back to US they are required to surrender their Indian Passport and take a US Passport.

Can some one kindly share the experience of returning back to US with such situation.

    1. How difficult/Easy it is to surrender the Indian Passport?
    2. Did Immigration at India cause any problem while returning with US Passport with No Indian VISA.
    3. Or One have to get a PIO while getting an US Passport in India before heading for US. (How difficult it is to get PIO in such situation)
    4. I am sure the easiest part will be to get a US Passport from US Embassy.

    Kindly help.

      did anyone find a solution

      I have a similar situation.

My US born son entered India on an Indian passport. Now we are going back to the US and my son has a US passport now.

According to FRRO Delhi, there is no need for a minor to surrender Indian passport (and take any exit permit or visa).

Has someone gone through this process before?

Changing child's passport to US passport in India

        Moyukh,
My son had come to India from the US with an Indian passport in 2000. In 2001 we got him a US passport. We had to surrender his Indian passport in order to get him an Indian visa for him to live in India. We were asked to surrender the PP at the passport office in Calcutta, otherwise they would not grant him a visa. You cannot leave the country with a US pp without an Indian visa stamp. My advice to you would be to get him his Indian visa to avoid any hassle later on. Hope this helps.
