  • Apply passport for US born - Needs to get education in India

    Hello Everyone,

Typical question !! If a child is born in US to Indian parents, what are her options ? I know this kind of question is discussed already, but some of the details are not available - at least to me :-( !! We would like to go back to India in a year or so and want to give her education in India.

As per the posts in the forum, I have a couple of options !!

Option 1: Apply US passport & get PIO to go to India. In this case, the child has to pursue her education as an NRI. I dont have any questions on this.
Note: College education is very costly for NRIs in India !! That is why I am posting this !!

Option 2: Apply Indian passport while in US and go to India as an Indian citizen. Get into schools as other indian citizens do. I am not sure how do I prove the child as Indian with US birth certificate, but I hope Indian passport will do.

Let us assume I go for option 2. Now, here is what is not clear to me !!

    1) Since the child goes to India on Indian passport, how will she get back to US if at all she needs to come here !! I have read somewhere that the baby is born in US and so US consulate will not issue a visa for the kid.

    2) If the child wants to come back to US : Should I apply for US passport for the kid while in India ( not sure if that is possible ), what will happen to the Indian passport ( that I applied for her in US )? I guess I have to cancel the Indian passport at this time. What will happen to Indian citizenship in that case ?

What if she needs to make a couple of travels in the next year :-( No way ???!!!

All I wanted to find out is : a) Can she get indian education as Indian citizens b) Is there a way for her to come back to US whenever she wants ( just like other US citizens do ) ?

    Thank you all for time,
    Jayaprakash.

You can't have both US and Indian passports at the same time. You will have to choose one.

Therefore, you can't have best of the both worlds.

You will have to make a decision regarding,
    * Do you want the kid to travel to the US at all?
    * Or do you want to pay NRI fees for child's education?
