  • Applying for PIO at NYC

Hi I will soon be applying for PIO at NYC.
Do I need to leave my US Passport and Naturalization certificate with the consulate?
Do I need to notorize all the photo copies?
If my family is in India, how can I produce info for item #13 and #14 in the PIO form?
    Thanks

Passport, yes. The site doesn't specify notarized and, since you're including the original passport, it shouldn't be necessary. If you're submitting the application in person perhaps they'll just confirm it and allow you to keep it, but I'm not certain.

        Naturalization certificate, no.

        They're going to have to:
        1) supply the data to fill out the tables and;
        2) also provide photocopies of passports or other docs to show Indian citizenship. As originals won't be included they should have them notarized before sending. When I got some stuff notarized in India they had another stamp that stated that the documents were valid for use outside India.

Fyi, here's what I supplied to the Houston consulate:

Curtdfw Actually sorry I probably didnot mention my question correctly. What I meant is my family (wife/kid) are indian citizens and are physically in india and I am alone in US with USC. In such a case how to produce docs for #13 and #14 because I dont have their passport photocopies neither of my parents.

OK, so you're applying as the spouse of an Indian citizen? Pretty much the same situation I was in.

No worries. The form I used was slightly different, but in the spaces equivalent to Qs 13/14 I just entered my wife's information and included (spouse) after her name. The parents stuff doesn't apply here. Basically I just followed the statement on your application just below Q14 (I eliminated the stuff that doesn't apply):
(Note: If the applicant is a spouse of a citizen of India..., his/her full particulars including date and place of birth, proof of residence, nationalities held and passport details (previous and present) may be given.)

I already had notarized photocopies of my wife's Indian passport, which made it simpler, but that should be the only additional doc you need, assuming you have the original marriage certificate.

            Hope this helps.

Thanks but wondering why would I need marriage certificate exactly? My wife is indian citizen and not USC with PIO, so I am not applying on anyone's behalf but just applying for myself actually.

I was assuming that you had no Indian heritage yourself, but qualified for PIO because of marriage (this was my situation). I had to provide evidence that we were legitimately married, hence providing the certificate.

Curtdfw, thanks for reply, I believe our situations are in fact different. Another question...I wont be able to provide utility bills as i share room with a person and pay him in cash. Is there any other way I can provide address proof? they dont accept credit card bill or bank statement unfortunately.

She could apply for a tourist visa, but I don't know the length of stay that they grant to Iranian nationals.

She can enter on a tourist visa but must first convert it to an 'X' or Entry visa before applying for PIO. You must also be married for one year before applying for PIO.

If you've been married for more than one year you could also apply directly for PIO from outside India (say, from Singapore) without the extra step of the 'X' visa. Doing PIO in India can take several months, and many find it a simpler process to apply from their home or residence country. I got mine in the US in one month.

Well, how about other official documents like tax returns etc? If you don't have exactly what they want, then provide them with what you have (the credit card & bank info) and include a letter explaining the situation. Good luck.

Congratulations, and welcome to the club. As noted, passport and PIO are all you need. Some Indian airports have special (and shorter) immigration lines for PIO/OCI, so look out for them...
