OCI renewal for Minor

My Son's US passport expired and we got a new one recently. The OCI card has the old passport number. Is it mandatory to apply for OCI renewal? OCI card itself does not have any expiration.
We are traveling to India in the month of May.

I did renew for my kid when we got a new passport. I don't see the word mandatory in OCI guidelines. In fact, the visa type is marked as lifelong in the OCI. You can argue, you can use the same OCI as long as you want. My question is, why don't they put the passport expiry date as OCI expiry date. Airlines are using your passport expiry date when you give them the OCI. I talked to the boarding agent last time and found that!

Please read the messages in this forum. Some say it is ok not to renew, but carry the old and new passport. Some say the had problems carrying the old (and new) passport. IMO, it will be easy for the officer to see the passport number in the OCI and the passport match. Some officers don't know how to do their job. Are you a risk taker or not? That gives you an answer.

Thanks for the response. Per CKGS it takes 3 months to get new OCI and I am leaving shortly to India. What are my options now?

When applying for Re-Issue of OCI due to new passport for minor - do we need to re-send the copies of current passports of parents, and also former Indian passports of parents to prove Indian origin? Thanks.
