Travelling to US while passport renewal under process

Hi, I have applied for passport renewal for my son in India. Got the old passport back (which has his US visa) but still not received new one. Old passport is valid for 2 months more. Can he travel using old passport , if we do not get the new one in time. Or is old passport cancelled when we apply for a new one ?
Please advise.

Was the old one returned with either a stamp stating 'canceled' (or similar wording) and/or the corners of the passport clipped or holes punched into it? Generally the old passport is canceled only when the new one is issued.

The passport is in force until the closing validity date is reached. Some countries insist on at least six months of remaining validity to issue a visa, but since your son already has the visa, you should be OK.

Yes, the old passport was returned with a "canceled" stamp on it. But I have not got the new one yet.. So I am guessing I will have to wait for it..

You must have got the new passport along with the old one. If you didn't receive the new one, get back to the passport issuing authority ASAP. Don't try to travel with a cancelled passport - its no longer valid.
