Length of stay in India with a PIO card

Hi,
How long can a US citizen with a PIO card stay in India ? The reason I am asking this is because I remember the immigration officer in India had told us something about getting registered or something if the stay in India for the US citizen extends beyond 6 months. Since, during that time, there was no intension of staying back for that long, so we didn't bother to pay much attention to what he said and the procedure to get it done.
Can anyone of you share any information on this ?

You can stay for any length you want.

Minors visit to India

I am a GC holder and my kids are US Citizens and we are planning to have them spent Summer vacation with their grandparents in India for almost 4-5 months without us.

Can you help me or guide me on any legality issues with that or any rules for staying out of US or in India for that long? One of the kids has PIO card and the other one has Indian Visa which still has 6+ years to expire.

The biggest question is can both the kids (minors) stay in India without their parents on their own individual visa statuses?
