orginal u.s passport for pio card

Is it neccessary to send orginal u.s passport for pio card, recently i downloaded pio application form from indian embassy washington D.C,
in that they removed this in required documents (sometime back, may be two months ago, when i downloaded, they clearly mentioned to attach orginal u.s passport). Anyone know about this?
