  • Unable to file police complaint for lost Indian Passport

    Hi all,

We live in California, US. We are looking to apply for a duplicate passport for my wife who lost her Indian passport recently. When we call a few police stations nearby, they say they don't take complaints for Indian passports and only take complaints for US passports. In some police stations, they say they would take complaints only for theft but not misplaced or lost passports. But the application process requires a police complaint. We've tried calling CKGS, Indian Consulate multiple times to see what other options we have. But they haven't been very helpful. Has anyone faced a similar issue before? How did you deal with this? My wife is super worried about this. We could go to the nearby consulate. But we'd welcome any other tips or suggestions.

Do you have a copy of the lost passport? Do you have the birth certificate, visa (or copy) and other documents to apply for a passport? If yes, I would suggest going to the consulate and explaining in person. You need to prove you are really from India. You need a document to go back to India and the Indian consulate should help you. Worse case you can get an EC --> https://www.cgichicago.gov.in/page/display/88
