  • Visa w/o Surrender Certificate

My wife is traveling to India in couple of days after obtaining a 6 month visa. During the application process we had sent her Indian passport along with the renunciation form from the travisa website. She got her US passport with the visa stamped on May 3rd. They also returned the Indian passport after stamping "Passport cancelled as the holder has acquired foreign nationality" on the first page. We didn't get any certificate.

Would the new rule that we have to obtain Surrender Certificate, affect her travel? Will there be any problem at the immigration in India?

    Please respond

Seems unlikely to cause any issues with immigration, but it would be worth contacting Travisa and asking about it.

Last week I applied for my wife's India visa for the first time since she got citizenship. I have an expired India Visa from 2009 so I applied for a new one. We had to apply for Entry Visa as they are no longer handing out Tourist Visas if you were born in India.

Anyway, I had my Indian passport with 'Canceled' stamp but my wife's didn't as she never had an Indian Visa. I had to give a MO for $175 along with a form, and both of us got Visas (Entry Visa) in the evening. She got her passport with the canceled stamp *and* a surrender certificate. Since mine was already canceled from 2009, I got the passport back with no certificate. I asked TraVisa about it, they said since my passport is already canceled I wont get the certificate.

I think the certs are only for the ones who are paying $175 (or more). I do not remember any fee or any surrender form when I applied for the Visa back in 2009. Anyway, I think the stamp on the passport should suffice - at the end of the day its the canceled passport which matters IMO.

Hope this helps! Do post your wife's experience at the port of entry in India though. Best of luck!

        Tourist Visa - Surrender Certificate

Hello, I have a 10 year tourist visa that expires in a few years. I emailed Travisa Outsourcing asking if I need to get a surrender certificate since I am travelling to India in a few weeks. I also called them and spoke to a lady who said that I would need a surrender certificate no matter what type of visa I have. However, soon after that, Travisa responded via email saying that if I had a valid visa, I can travel to India. I would NOT need to obtain the surrender certificate at this time. When my current visa expires, then I would need to apply for the surrender certificate. They also mentioned that you must do this before you apply for the new visa. 2 Contradicting responses - but I have the response in writing that i would not need one. I also emailed the consulate with such questions and they claim on their website that due to high phone call volumes, they advise to email and will respond within 24 hours - it is now over 36 hours and I have not heard from them. I might go to the consulate with all my paperwork in person within next week and see what they have to say before I pay them.

          @captain_crunch,

Could you share more information about your wife's visa? I'm in the same boat. Since a week, I am waiting for my visa in Chicago.

          May I know -
When did you apply for your wife's Entry visa alongwith Renunciation form?
Where did you apply for this visa?
How many days it took to get her Entry visa? Same day? You must be incredibly lucky.

          Thanks much in advance.

            cooldude12345 :

            1. I got my visa (1 year) March 2009, at that time I gave them my Indian Passport which was stamped 'canceled' and returned to me. No surrender fee, no surrender cert. That visa expired March 2010 so I had to apply for a new one, along with my wife and kid.

            2. All of our visas were applied on May 13th 2010 at TraVisa Outsourcing, San Francisco. I got the appointment in advance (May 11th 2010). Got the visas same day (6 month Entry). The rules changed 11th or 12th May so I had to give them $175 for my wife. Along with that I also applied for my Visa (same, 6 mo Entry) and gave them my canceled Indian Passport. In the evening, my wife's passport was canceled and she got a surrender certificate. I got the visa but no cert. I asked Travisa, they said since my passport is already canceled I wont get a certificate.

            3. On SF Consular website, it says they will not issue a cert if the passport is already canceled/surrendered. so clearly I wont get a certificate anyway.

            Hope this helps
