Renunciation certficate camp in NY on May 29

In order to cope with the rush for obtaining the renunciation/surrender certificate, a special camp is being organised at the Consulate General of India at New York on Saturday, May 29, 9 am to 5.30 pm.

Applicants who need to travel to India urgently are advised to come in person, bring all the documents, complete all the formalities and obtain their certificates on the same day.

The consulate is organizing the camp. We just posted this news so that some people could go there and get their services.

We are not going to that camp. Therefore, there is no way for us to post the experiences.

Those who are going there should post their experiences.

I am going to the NY consulate this Saturday May 29th.. My OCI is stuck even though my Passport was cancelled 6 months back...will have to get Surrender certificate hopefully without paying the $175

Please try to ask questions about not just your scenario but several others as well, such as the procedure for those who have already cancelled their passport in past etc.

I plan to be at this "camp". My PIO application was received May 4th. I am travelling on June 11th.
Per the website
Applicants who need to travel to India on emergency or whose documents for Overseas Citizenship of India have been received at the Consulate, are advised to come in person,.... They will be given their Certificates at the Consulate on the same day.

I take it to mean (hope really) that this applies for those PIO applications that were received prior to this annoucement as well. Probably anybody's guess at this point.. Regardless would like to know if anyone has info on this. Thanks

Does anyone know if a derivative asylee can get Renunciation Certification.

Our case was very similar to yours, and the dates are remarkably close too. We went in person to apply for the renunciation certificate on May 21st. Along with the application for the Renunciation certificate, we had a cover letter explaining that our PIO is pending and all our particulars. We had carried a print out of our e-ticket to prove our travel dates.

Ms. Mridula in the PIO department was very helpful. She took our paperwork from the renunciation certificate department and after reviewing our application, she told us that she will take care of us. On the fourth business day morning, our PIO cards, renunciation certificate and the passports were delivered by express mail.

If they don't issue your PIO on the same day, try to speak with her nicely and see if she can express mail them to you quickly.

Thanks for sharing your info. Your experience is encouraging. hope it turns out for me the same way too. I was at the camp - was some experience!
With lots of luck & timing, I got my SC and also met a top level official - not Ms. Mridula - was very nice and sympathetic. unfortunately try as i did couldn't get my PIO today. But I was assured that my PIO will be mailed Monday. hoping to get it by thursday.

I got my surrender certificate and oci today in the camp at the consulate. I had to line for more than 6 hrs.
