  • Surrender Certificate

I have applied for surrender certificate in person in NYC on 17th of this month. They said they will send it by mail and still waiting. Not sure when it will come. I have booked tickets to India and my travel date is July 2. Not sure if i should apply for PIO or Visa at this stage.
Please advice. I appreciate your help.
    Thanks

Whether you apply for PIO or visa, you still need surrender certificate.

It is not possible for anyone here to tell you how long they will take to give you the surrender certificate, as only they know.

SURRENDERANCE CERTIFICATE NYC Camp 5/29/10 Experience

Just wanted to share my experience with this forum.

I went to the embassy around 8:45AM and the line had extended all the way out of the embassy to Madison Ave. If I had to guess, there were over 1000 people there. Several folks with Ohio/Mass/Penn state license plates had driven there. It appeared that the embassy was not quite anticipated this. A person from embassy walked out around noon asking people not to stand in line and waste time since the facility was meant to help OCI applicants who needed to travel to India urgently. That didn't seem to have any effect since people just stood in the line anyway. Made my way to the entrance of the basement little after 1 pm and I was told that I needed to have my application in duplicate. Some of us (My application for OCI was in Jan and I'm still waiting for response. I got an email from the embassy that I needed to obtain the surrenderance certificate. I had immediately printed out the application, had it notarized and ready to mail and at that time I heard about the camp and decided to go personally as I had lost trust in getting any timely response from the embassy and I didn't want my trip to India jeopardized because of this issue). Turned out that they had changed the application twice (and the filing instructions - the original instructions did not ask for 2 copies). Having made copies and made my way into the embassy, my token number was called around 2 pm, only to learn that I had to fill out the new application forms (which was not published on their webpage when I checked on Fri night). After doing so, I submitted my application at 2:30pm and around 3:30pm I was given the surrenderance certificate at the 2nd floor. At that time, I asked at the OCI counter the status of my application. Although I have received a mail from the embassy indicating that they acknowledge the receipt of my application, the staff said that he could not say anything further and the only advice he had was that I re-print the application and send it over again with the surrenderance (and any other missing document if "I thought" may have made my application incomplete).
I need to travel to India in 1st week of July and I'm trying to decide whether to pursue the OCI process again or just get the visa and move on.

While I was near the counter, another applicant fumed at the NYC staff with the word "ridiculous" that the consulate was ill prepared. Next thing I see is that the staff got made telling them not to use such words. While I didn't think "ridiculous" was such a bad word, the situation was clearly frustrating for everyone - for people who gave their Saturday driving all the way and standing in line without food/restroom breaks just to get around the red tape of surrenderence certificate (which is nothing more than legalized robbery in my opinion) and embassy staff who just was not prepared for and, if any, understaffed to handle this crowd.... Clearly no winners here.

Thanks for sharing it. Atleast you (NYC area) guys are lucky to have a chance like that. I'm in Chicago - the etiquette/work-style/processing-time here are beyond "ridiculous". I, like many others, are still waiting for our OCI since 4 months without any indication of the reason of the delay.. Moreover, now, my visa application is delayed due to surrender certificate.

I've to now look it up in dictionary for a word stronger than "ridiculous".

I noticed a few who did end up getting the OCI the same day. They were lucky enough to get hold of a few senior officials early on who helped them out before it got too overwhelming for the officials. My own sense is that if you make a second trip to nyc you should be able to get it in person. Obviously no one knows for sure. it's all pretty random at this point.

                      Photocopy od Naturalization certificate?

For those of you who have applied for your surrender certificate, did you send a photocopy of your Naturalization certificate? I am concerned as on the it certificate says it's illegal to make a copy of this document.

Rules not uniform at Indian consulates for surrender certificate

Who the hell makes rules for this Surrender Certificate? Each consulate website has different rules and some make no sense at all and are contradictory.
