Surrender Certificate - India Passport & US Passport

I have a couple of questions regarding the surrender certificate I plan to take at SFO:

1. Do they return the Indian Passport (with a cancel stamp) or take it away completely?

2. My Indian Passport got expired a few days back. Does that matter when applying for surrender certificate.

3. I have the Oath ceremony (for US Citizenship) in a few days.
Can I apply the surrender certificate as soon as I get the
US Citizenship Certificate/document or do I need to wait till
I get the US Passport?

Hello,

They will return the passport with a stamp saying it is cancelled. You will want to submit it for cancellation once you acquire U.S. citizenship. It should not matter if the Indian passport has expired.
