  • Visa for India and then getting OCI in India

    Hello All Experts,

(Pardon me for asking in open, but if there is a OCI @ India forum, please point me to the same. Thanks.)

My wife is Indian by birth and has recently acquired US citizenship. She will be getting her US passport in about 2 weeks (applied on 09 July 2020, Chicago USPS). She will use CKGS to apply for VISA and Renunciation and once done, she will travel to India for few months to meet family.

Since Covid is ongoing, my wife will like to apply for OCI in India instead of apply and wait for it in Chicago. The wait time in Chicago is about 2 months for OCI (I guess that is the average time now). I will like to read through any recent experience regarding FRRO offices for OCI in India. Please share if anyone has it in 2020.

I am reading multiple info online from CKGS and FRRO websites....what is the exact process for OCI I will like to know. Can it be done online ?

Also, if there is a fast track OCI in Chicago, we can think of that too.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Per MEA guidelines, you cannot apply for OCI in India while you are on a tourist / business visa. I would suggest the following:
    1. Apply for OCI while in the US
    2. Wait till she gets her US passport back after verification
    3. You can send her the OCI card via mail or through anyone else who will be traveling in the near future
    4. She can then go to the FRRO to update records.
