      Surrender cert = Renunciation cert.

Yes it is true they create their own cert paper and give that so I don't really get why do they bother us for sending 2 original copies of dummy renunciation cert in the first place. I stressed over the format of the cert which I sent, wasn't sure if I sent the correct version, just to realize that they don't give a damn about it.

      • I am applying for Renunciation certificate however in my indian passport my name has my middle name in given name . When i got Us passport it just has my first and my last name is it considered name change ? As on the check list it says it has to match or else submit name change documents but technically i havent change my name just my middle name is not added in us passport. Can anybody please help how should i proceed ? And also when filing the form it says renunciation certificate should match indian passport name .

It is not a name change, but the Indian Consulate considers it a name 'variation'. And they require you to submit a notarized affidavit explaining the difference in how your name is recorded in the Indian Passport vs US passport.

See this pdf for details - https://visa.vfsglobal.com/one-pager...-affidavit.pdf

I had a similar issue - in the Indian passport my name was written as "middlename firstname" under given names, while in the US passport it is written as "firstname middlename". I submitted the following notarized affidavit (feel free to modify and format it to your needs). VFS reviewed it and submitted to the consulate, still under process at the consulate.

          AFFIDAVIT
          TO DECLARE VARIATION IN NAME

I, ___________________________ , born on _____________ and residing at ______________________ , do hereby solemnly affirm and declare :

          1. That, in my Indian Passport (No. X1234567) my name is recorded as ______________ (surname) _______________________ (given names) while in my U.S. Passport (No. 123456789) my name is recorded as ________________ (surname) ______________ (first name) _____________ (middle name)
          2. That, I am the same individual stated in both the Indian & US passports
          3. That, only the order of words in my name is different
I swear or affirm that the above statements are true, correct and complete to the best of my information, knowledge and belief and nothing has been concealed therein.

DATED this ______ day of May, 2021 ______________________________
          Signature of Affiant

          ============================================================ ======
          STATE OF _____________
          COUNTY OF ________________

Subscribed and sworn (or affirmed) on this ______ day of __________, 20_____,
by __________________________________ , whose identity was proven to me.

              Total time:23 days - VFS:2 days & Consulate:19 days

I got a the "Surrender Certificate" printed on some good quality bond paper with a bar code at the top, (not the pre-filled renunciation certificate that was submitted with the application).

Next step, to apply for OCI. Plan to send that out in the next couple of days.

I sent both - two copies of the pre-filled certificate that VFS emailed, and two copies of the manually filled certificate that was linked to in the checklist. As a general rule, if you have any doubt about sending a document or not, just send it (unless it is an original). If they do not need it they will just ignore it, but if they need it and you do not send it, your application will be delayed.

On the manually filled certificate, write the name as it is in the Indian passport. If you see the renunciation checklist, under the name change section they mention it "The name as on the Indian Passport will appear on the Renunciation Certificate since it is a surrender of an Indian passport." Anyway, looks like they will ignore both and send their own version of surrender certificate.

BTW, I do not think my application was quick. They are supposed to process renunciation in 6-7 days, but they took 19 days for mine. I sent them an email after 14 days, and they responded that I will get it within the next week. IMO, they only processed it after I emailed them. See user 0xim's timeline with DC Consulate at the top of this page - submitted same time as I and got it 10 days before me.

                  Good luck with your renunciation.

                    • arkaa i did send my application with variation of name change affidavit but this morning I received an email from vfs stating that document is missing and they need name change affidavit in order to process the application. Should i just send name change affidavit thats on vfs website for passport ? As there is no separate name change affidavit on vfs website for renunciation. Also how difficult its to make them understand that i haven't change name just removed my middle name . Should i also send letter of explanation along with affidavit? Any suggestions pls

Sorry to hear about your problem. I sent the same affidavit I posted above for my Renunciation and OCI. VFS processed both without issue and submitted to the Consulate (my OCI is currently under process at the Houston Consulate).

As you said, yours is not a name change, just a variation in name. I would first try emailing your Consulate and explain the issue (mention your ARN and attach a copy of the notarized affidavit you submitted to VFS). They may accept it and instruct VFS to process the application. From my experience, the Consulate usually replies to emails within 24 hours.

If you have any other US ID that shows your middle name (like Driver's License or Employee ID etc), then attaching a copy might help as it shows that your name didn't change and you just opted to not have your middle name on the passport.

If that doesn't work, then I guess you will have to provide the name change affidavit in the format they want. Doesn't make any sense, but such is the brainless process of the Indian bureaucracy - finicky about name spellings and address proofs ????

Did you include the one and same name affidavit notarized or just sent an affidavit without notary? They req notarized affidavit. Just google one and same name affidavit and send that.
