I got my US citizenship before 2010 and I don't have my current Indian passport. I wanted to renew my OCI so they are asking for Renunciation. I went to the VFS site to get information https://services.vfsglobal.com/usa/e...r-renunciation This site requires a Government Reference Number (ARN) this number is obtained by filling a the form in https://portal4.passportindia.gov.in/Online/index.html this Indian government site requires to fill in an Indian Passport number which I don't have what do I do ?

Hi - I had some clarifications on renunciation documents would request if someone can help. Thanks in advance.
1. I see there is a renunciation certification form already filled in and sent by email when you paid the fees online and also there is request to fill 2 renunciation forms as part of document checklist. Which do we have to submit - the prefilled one in email or fill the one in checklist and send that.
2. There is a photo needed to attached on the application form and 2 photos mentioned in checklist so are 3 photos needed ?
3. My child was born in India and became US citizen due to parents naturalization. What should be naturalization date mentioned for child the date when first parent got naturalized ?

Hey everyone,
I'm at my wits end so any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated. I actually got my renunciation application approved through VFS and the SF Consulate. Unfortunately the only form sent back to me was a stamped Surrender certificate and my cancelled passport. VFS keeps telling me that the Surrender certificate and the renunciation certificate are the same. I also submitted 2 copies of the Renunciation certificate as per their checklist but it seems the consensus on this forum is that this form is no longer used.
I just don't understand how 'Surrender of Indian Passport' equals 'Renunciation of Indian Citizenship'. The form I received back doesn't mention anything about citizenship or renunciation, just that my passport is surrendered. How is a third party supposed to determine that a Surrender certificate is the same as a Renunciation certificate.
Does anyone have any advice on how one can go about getting a stamped Renunciation certificate? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My spouse's certificate says "Renunciation Certificate" at the top of the page, and has a Reference Number starting with USA on the right corner (do you have that?). At the bottom, in the box where the Vice Consul actually stamped and signed, it says "Surrender Certificate" as the heading. Here is the actual wording in the box:
Surrender Certificate
Date : Mon DD YYYY
This is to certify that Mr. / Ms. YYYY YYYYY has renounced his / her Indian Citizenship and acquired United States Citizenship. His / Her Indian Passport mentioned above has been cancelled and returned to the Passport holder.
Signature and Stamp (Consulate Officer)

Few reasons. 1 was Covid closures and then they changed outsourcing vendors from CKGS to VFS which kind of stopped the processing of applications for few weeks in November last year. All this combined messed up a lot of things and caused additional delays. Hope to see better processing times in the future. I did renunciation and OCI via VFS earlier in December-Jan '20-21 and everything went smooth. Renunciation took about 3 weeks and OCI took about 5 weeks. This was in Houston BTW.

Mar 12. It is unbelievable that it takes them weeks just to put a stamp on a sheet of paper & passport. And they charge $200 for the same with such pathetic service (Mar 12-25: Progress=0%). Worth filing a complaint to MEA.
If mine makes any progress, i'll update here.

I am glad your applications went smoothly, though I think 3 weeks for renunciation is still a nightmare. OCI - 5 weeks is understandable sort of.Last edited by bloxer; 03-25-2021, 10:36 PM.
