Passport expiry in 6 months - OCI

My Son's passport expires later this year and I am trying to make an India trip in the summer.

How critical is it to have 6-months left on the passport before travel? Will I have to renew it for sure? Reason I ask is that I am concerned if I have to re-apply for new OCI card again, which will take 2 months.

Can we travel with new passport and old OCI card? Anyone experienced this before?

I have travelled many times to India with OCI card , Expired Passport with OCI referenced and Current Passport. We have travelled with our son with same situations. No issues.

I have recently received an email from CGI saying the below statements:


OCI card holders can travel.

Please make sure to carry the current passport and old passport which is connected to the OCI card (Only applicable if you have multiple US passports).

There is a relaxation to get it re issued with the current new passport. The relaxation is until June 30, 2021. So if your travel plan is before June 30, 2021 you can carry both passport along with the OCI card and travel. There is no need to apply for entry/ emergency visa.
