  • Travelling to India during summer

    Hi Folks

We were thinking of travelling to India during Summer 2021. Does India allow US Citizens with a valid tourist visa to travel or are there still restrictions due to Covid?

    Kind regards

At the current moment only OCI holders and emergency visa are allowed.

High level ministerial talks are currently underway to allow people with tourist visa. Should be a phased opening. Hope they allow US citizens with tourist visa soon as we also plan to travel to India in summer and both my kids have 10 year multi-entry tourist visa. Avoiding OCI cards for them as I don't want to get into hassles of renewing them every 5 years. But if there's no update on this in next few weeks, then I will be forced to get OCI for kids too! Hope I don't have to get OCI for them yet

I was actually in a similar dilemma and ended up biting the bullet to get OCI cards for all of us including my kids. The fees for OCI re-issue appears to be on-par with e-visa fees, but the process is painful. The only silver lining if any is that OCI re-issue does NOT require original US passports to be sent every 5 years. They just need copies of the US passport and saves a bit of hassle with the two-step process.

I am a bit confused about the visa situation. Are they not issuing any new visas for non-emergency travel? Some one told me that we can apply for a X-visa. Is that not true?

Only certain categories of visa travel is allowed. https://www.cgisf.gov.in/page/entry-visa-services/

They are lumped under the Entry visa, but only covers business/medical/employment visas.

I also heard that entry visa could be applied for at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/

I am actually traveling to Indian during the summer, with kids, it's the only time I can go. Right now, we just sent in an application for a visa, however, we had a document proving that it's for emergency since we had a death in the family back in October of 2020. We have to send in our original documents along with our passport to the Atlanta, GA Embassy, so let's see what they say.
