  • Renunciation help

I am trying to renunciate my Indian passport/citizenship. unfortunately, I no longer have my Indian passport. when filling out the affidavit of loss of Indian passport it asked for the Indian passport number and where it was issued. I do not know what to write. Can I leave it blank? also, I was wondering about the affidavit of naturalization after the expiry of the Indian passport. Does that need to included. In truth, I was naturalized in 1990, and my parents no longer have my passport so there is no way of knowing if it was before or after. Any help anyone can give will be greatly appreciated. thank you

I would advise not to leave it blank, they can reject your application as incomplete. Get confirmation that is ok to leave them blank. Forget about the "affidavit of naturalization after the expiry of the Indian passport" - you don't remember, they won't have the info- so why complicate it further?

First, contact your local consulate (check their website for email & contact info) and explain your situation. They may have a solution for a unique situation like yours. If they are not helpful and insist on having the passport details, your only option is to approach the Passport Office where it was issued. I hope your parents remember that. If you know where it was issued and approximately when it was issued, then you can have a friend or relative in India approach that PO and place a request on your behalf to get your passport details.

Don't answer if you don't want to, but you were naturalized in 1990 and been a citizen for over 30 years - so why renounce the Indian citizenship now? If you do not have any strong ties to India (especially financial) then you can just ignore it and continue as it is.

If you are planning on applying for OCI, then be aware that they may assess a penalty for every trip you took to India after you naturalized but did not renounce your Indian citizenship.

Oh.. I just remembered, you can file a request under the FOIA with USCIS and they will provide a complete record of your immigration history (takes a couple of months).

I was just looking at mine, and it has the passport details and even a copy of the passport I used to first enter US as an immigrant. So try that. Good luck.
