We finished acquiring OCI for three family members in March/April this year and two of us born in India had to provide our original USA passport and the "cancelled" Indian passport for verification and some notarized docs. The third was US born and had to only submit the original US passport with duly notarized docs.
A fourth member of our family finally got around to applying for their OCI card yday and per the latest checklist I seemed to gather that NO ORIGINAL passports or even expired Indian passports with the "cancelled" page needs to be submitted. I double-checked with the checklist we used from March/April and now and this seemed to be the change. We still had to provide notarized docs(some in case of no naturalisation certificate etc) but otherwise NO ORIGINAL docs were required to be submitted.
In fact step #3 asks for a self-attested COPY of your current US passport(which we provided notarized though that wasnt an ask). Step #5 of the checklist asks for COPY of the cancelled page and #6 which asks for proof of Indian origin(pages 1,2,3 and last 2 pages of cancelled passport) says specifically NOT TO SUBMIT your Indian passport.
In the checklist from March/April step #3 asked for the ORGINAL US passport to be sent in as well as the original cancelled Indian passport to be included.
This is what I based my conclusion on that no original docs need to be submitted.
Has anyone used this new process recently and gotten an OCI. I sent the application in without including any passports at all, and was hoping I have followed the right process. I know if needed they will ask me for more documentation but wanted to be sure I had followed due process just for my immediate peace of mind.
Thanks.
