Notarized documents for OCI Adult (US national by birth)

Hi,

Working through the documents required for OCI for Adult who is US national by birth and need clarification on which documents need to be notarized. I found this link dated Feb 6th, 2021 that states that all new OCI applicants must send notarized copies of US passport.

Can I send copies of all other documents, such as my birth certificate, parents marriage certificate etc., as stated in the checklist, Or do I need to notarize them as well?

While the checklist says copies or self-signed copies for other documents, they have not bothered to update it to reflect the change in notarization requirement for the USA passport copy.

Want to know others experience with this.

There are so many sites listing all kinds of stuff. Even the VFS Global the only vendor allowed to accept the OCI applications has discrepancies on their site too. Unless you are looking at a link from either the official Govt. of India OCI site or the official VFS Global site, I would be leery of doing much if anything.

If you are applying for a US National by birth, what I have gathered, so far, is that, now, all of a sudden, they are demanding an Apostilled Original Birth Certificate. When I applied for my US Born kids in 2010, that was not the case. The plain certified original birth certificate was fine. My brother-in-law is having all kinds of issues with paperwork and getting things lined up (likely due to not paying attention to the instructions per say) and has had his Adult daughter's OCI application rejected 2 times already.

The checklist asks for an apostilled birth certificate only if the applicant was born outside of India or USA. I am born in the USA, so technically this should not apply. But I am not surprised at the inconsistent application of their own guidelines.

If the applicant was born outside of India or USA, birth certificate copy must be apostilled or attested by the foreign mission concerned is required.

If your kids have a US birth certificate and you are applying for OCI in the US, then you do not need apostilled birth certificate. A certified copy from the county clerk will do.

Yeah. I was posting an update to the Apostilled post. I can attest to the fact that my niece was asked for an Apostilled Cert and she was born here in NJ. They seem to have changed this requirement in the last couple months.
