Possession of Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI)

My question is:-

If you are granted an OCI – lifelong VISA for India. I am a British Citizen and if something happens whilst in India, am I under the protection of the British Embassy or am under the Indian Embassy?

I would like some reassurance and confirmation please, as friends and family are giving me mixed interpretations.

Thank you. I realise that whilst in India I would be subject to local Indian laws. However, if I should encounter a problem i.e. lost passport, lost travel documents / immigration problems. Do I contact the British Embassy (as a British Citizen) or the local Indian Government.

If you lose your British passport, you contact British embassy.
