My wife has applied for Renunciation Certificate in July 2010. She did not have her Indian passport or copy of last Indian Passport. It was misplaced when we moved to our current address in March 1988. So she acquired Police Certificate for lost Indian Passport and also signed notarized affidavit stating lost passport. For supporting documents, she has included Naturalization Certificate, copy of her expired US passports and a copy of current passport, birth certificate, School leaving certificate (issued in India); Marriage Certificate to show the name change. But she got her application back stating that she needs Indian Passport. Well she does not have Indian Passport in her possession otherwise she would have send it with application. She became naturalized US Citizen since 1985 and travelled to India twice on Visitor visa. I am OCI card holder and her parents also were born in India along with her and her brother. Her mother remain Indian Citizen, she passed away in 1996 in India. My question is what does she need to get visitor visa for India? My father, 90 year old wants to see me and my wife. Please help.

Since your wife does not have an Indian passport in original, she cannot have it cancelled and get a surrender certificate. She can apply for an Entry visa through Travisa submitting the documents you had submitted for a surrender certificate. She can also apply for a PIO or OCI card at the appropriate CGI with the same documents.

I have applied for OCI originally
Thank you for your suggestion. I will apply for entry visa since we will be going to India very soon. Originally I have applied for OCI card for my wife with same documents. Indian Embassy in Washington DC returned my wife’s application stating that she needs to have surrender certificate before she can apply for OCI? Now without Indian passport, Embassy will not issue surrender certificate. So what are her option to obtain OCI?
