  • PIO Card for infants

    Hello,

Need to apply for PIO for my infants [4 mos old]. I and my wife are US Citizens and have valid PIO cards. Can't locate my old Indian Passports and quite possibly lost. Do I need a Surrender Certificate? If so, what do we do about Old Passport numbers which we do not have? The consulate website talks about a Affadavit to be notarized and submitted. No format shown.

I and my wife have travelled to India several times in the last so many years without a problem. Would I still need a Surrender Certificate in order to apply for PIO cards for my children? They have valid US Passports.

Please help because the consultate just does not care.

    Thanks
    VR

No SC Reqd for US born child for PIO application

There is no SC required for US born child PIO application. Since you do not have your Indian Passport you can send notarized copies of your parents paasport or your spouse parents passport. Also send notarized copies of your both PIO. Make sure you also send all documents and fees as per your consulate website.

To be safe also send a notorized letter stating the facts that your Indian passports are misplaced or lost.

You cen get free notary service from your bank. Please check with your bank.

    Good Luck.

      PIO Card for Infants

Thank you for the tip. But I don't quite understand the thing about 'MY PARENTS's AND MY WIFE'S PARENTS's Passports'. Are you seriously suggesting getting copies of their Indian Passports? What if they have never ever got a Passport? Besides they are all in India. I don't know why the fact that we already have PIOs card isn't proof that we are NRIs who had to submit Indian Passports to get the PIO cards in the first place. It is another thing that the consulate never bothered to return us the passports with CANCEL stamped on it.

Is there a format to the Affidavit/Letter? I would prefer taking all the precautions before sending anything. One other person on this forum has reported serious case of negligence and there is no recourse at our disposal. I sure don't want to travel to Houston just to pursue a PIO application. What a disgrace!!!

Would really want to hear your thoughts.

If they don't have passports, something that proves Indian citizenship like a Voters ID/registration card, ration card etc would suffice to prove Indian origin.

          PIO Card for Infants

That still makes no sense. PIO cards only given to Indians who were Indian Citizens sometime in their lives. Then why ration card or voting card? Good luck with the voting or the ration cards [if at all].

Will they reject my application if I sent them all docs without the Indian Passports or Indian Citizenship proof?

          Thanks

I don't think they will reject the application. May take their own sweet time though. Anytime you deal with the consulate, it is your responsibility to make sure that everything is in order. Whether it makes sense or not, we have to do it.

During green card processing or USC processing, you would have given finger prints multiple times. Why so? It does not make sense. You have given finger prints once and they have it in their systems. When they ask for it again, you gave them without questioning.

Same thing applies here too. No point in reasoning.

              PIO Card for Infants

              Hello there,

Just found out that we have OCI instead of PIO. Would that make any difference in our case?

I have a distinct feeling that we did submit our Old Indian Passports and never got them back with CANCEL stamped on them. I guess that may have been because of the fact that we were renouncing our Indian Citizenships.

              Any thoughts?

              Thanks
              Jaz
