  • OCI Reissue question

Hi, I have a somewhat related question to the ones that are already posted here. But the situation is somewhat different. My son got his OCI card when he was 18, and then a new passport when he was few months short of 20. At that the time the rule was to get the OCI updated with the new passport every time a new passport was issued before reaching 20, but we never renewed the OCI at that time. So, the passport number in the OCI still shows the older one. Now my son is 25, and the new rules says that we should renew the OCI card with the new passport, once after reaching 20. Since he got the new passport before he reached 20, technically we are not required to renew the OCI. But the passport in the OCI still shows the old one. In this situation, is it good enough for us to upload the new passport number and the latest photo on the OCI site, using the miscellaneous services, or is it safer to get OCI renewal, or just carry both the old and new passport when travelling?

I assume his new passport is a 10-year passport. So, he is not due for passport renewal until 29 years old. I also assume he didn't have a chance to travel to India since getting the new passport.

Indian Home Affairs website (and a few other webpages) https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIfram...x?PRID=1712082 refers to renewing the passport details within 3 months.

These documents may be uploaded by the OCI cardholder within 3 months of receipt of the new passport.

Since this new rule came in 2021 and with the pandemic situation, you may be excused from the 3-month rule. It says "may", not "should" or "must". I suggest using the miscellaneous service and uploading the new photo, signature, and new passport. You will get the updates approved or some other procedures to follow. Give it a try (or wait for others with similar experiences to share theirs) and let us know the outcome.

He did not travel to India since getting the new passport. But since he got the new passport before the age of 20, and at that time the 3 month rule was not in place, I assume I can upload the new passport details now? Or do I apply for OCI reissue. Alternatively can he travel to India by carrying the old and new passport?

I have seen posts on here from people who had kids who are now over 20 being routed to the re-issue process. The online OCI Miscellaneous application you do for passport particulars update will route you to the right process. Go to https://ociservices.gov.in/welcome and enter the needed information and if you need re-issue the system will say so. It only said that for my daughter who is now 21 but we did have a new passport for her which she just got at age 21.

For my son, the new passport he got is at his age 17 but its updated on the OCI site now so he is good till 27 which is when he will need the re-issue if the rules do not change by then.

BTW. We uploaded our passport stuff well past the 3 months as we were waiting for the kids' passports etc and my parents passports were from back in 2019 which we updated without any trouble except the very long wait at the DC embassy due to slow processing.

dvpatel Thanks for the response. Hopefully I do not need to go through the OCI re-issue as the new passport was got before he reached 20.
