Need to send passport for OCI stamp

Hi, I am about to send my kid OCI packet to VFS but little confused if at any point during the process I need to send VFS her US passport for OCI sticker etc. I remember in addition to the OCI booklet, the consulate put a lifelong visa sticker in my passport.
We are planning to visit India this summer so I would like to avoid any conflict with the visit and the OCI process. Thanks in advance.
